Peter Yuen is the Liberal candidate for Markham–Unionville, bringing decades of experience in public safety, community service, and real leadership. A proud resident of York Region, Peter is a former Deputy Police Chief and frontline leader who spent 34 years serving and protecting Canadians. His extensive background in law enforcement has equipped him with the skills to address complex challenges and deliver results that matter to residents of Markham–Unionville.

Born in Hong Kong, Peter immigrated to Canada with his family in 1975 at the age of eleven. Like so many immigrant families, the Yuens worked long hours to build a better life. As the oldest sibling, Peter helped raise his younger brother and sister while navigating a new language, new schools, and a new culture. That experience shaped his lifelong commitment to family, hard work, and giving back to the community.

Peter joined the Toronto Police Service in 1987, rising through the ranks to become Deputy Chief, one of the most senior roles in Canada’s largest municipal police service. He was responsible for 12 policing districts in Toronto and more than 4,000 officers and staff. Peter led major crime prevention efforts, expanded mental health crisis response programs, and oversaw critical units like emergency services, traffic, and communications.

As your candidate, Peter’s priorities for Markham–Unionville are clear: reduce crime and keep our families safe; cut taxes for the middle class, making life more affordable; tackle the housing crisis by securing funding for 6,600 new homes, and removing taxes for first-time homebuyers; and growing the local economy by standing up for small businesses to create more good-paying jobs.
